The Kuznetzov is a piece of junk. It literally can't deploy without an escorting tugboat. On the way to Syria for combat operations, it broke down four times. On one of those occasions, it had to be embarrassingly towed to a NATO base in Rota, Spain for repairs.
While off Syria, it lost 12% of it's aircraft as they crashed trying to land.
Now it is on fire in the shipyard.
The big, bad scary Russians, boogeyman of the West.

I totally agree ... the only reason they only lost 12% of their aircraft is that after the second arresting gear failure they transferred what was left to a land base.

SSG Robert Mark Odom - All the stories that have been told indicate a disastrous Aircraft Carrier that can barely function... Russia must be so embarrassed by it... This does not say much about the quality necessary in a manufacturing environment for a weapon system which is needed for their version of handling crises wherever needed... Thank the Lord that our Country has the great quality control programs available anywhere... It may seem like we spend too much for these programs, but we do not suffer the disastrous results which Russia has experienced!

On behalf of the members of the Russian Navy my best wishes go out to them. They are human beings just as we are and they take orders just as we do or did. When I was in service I got to go to Berlin before the Wall came down and it was a two-hour train ride from Frankfurt. There was a stop at about an hour into it while we were in soviet-controlled country where the Russian soldiers came on board and would come down the rows and a Zippo lighter would actually get you one of their genuine fur caps! Little things would get you pens and you share them back and forth. They were just soldiers just like we were.
From a military perspective, good. It's too bad the whole thing didn't go down. If only we could get China's Navy to catch fire. Even they are human beings but they're sneaky little bastards. They are required to spend 24 months in the military but they're still sneaky little bastards.
Back to the Russians - prayers to those injured and lost.

Indeed, no one wants to see people die (ok, maybe those ISIS bastards. They can all die.).
Hopefully they can get the fire out without any more casualties. Fire on a ship is nasty and dangerous business.

The good news is this particular floating disaster is in the yards. Since they are gutting the engine rooms to replace boilers etc, and scheduled to be there until 2022, it's unlikely there was more than dock yard workers on board.
