I think their success in WWI led to them being used as pilots in the Night Witches squadron of WWII

They absolutely did... though there's some limited debate regarding just exactly what is history and what is legend regarding their actions. One thing is certain; Maria Bochkareva was one heckuva commander, and one brave human being.
