I think pensions in the beginning were an incentive to stay in one place for longer periods of time - loyalty meant something. Nowadays, families need two income families and we often go where the paycheck is the most. We expect others to take care of us when we are the ones directly responsible for what our retirement accounts look like. There is no loyalty on both sides of the equation any more.
