Some lessons to be gleaned that hold true to this day -
Veterans defeat green units every time.
Static defenses work well if the enemy plays ball. If you think your enemy is smart, you had best plan for contingencies, as Caesar did, and have the flexibility to deal with enemy attempts to roll you up.
Hubris is still a problem. Pompey always thought he was a superior general, stemming from his many victories in previous campaigns. This really comes through in his writings. He had numbers, position, and a decent plan. I would bet that even when the danger became apparent when his cavalry scattered, he figured he would win by weight of numbers. But once his Army became engaged on its flank and harried in its rear, his legions had nowhere to go but fight in place. Anyone who has read a book on warfare knows how that goes in the open field. Underestimating the enemy's capacity to fight and ingenuity in doing so (or overestimating yours) has been the undoing of many a commander.
