"Military Veteran" Army reserve military intel officer, yawn.

"Gun manufacturers are aware they have a dangerous product, and it's no secret their marketing targets the kind of people who want to look and feel powerful."

This is the kind of twisted reasoning he is talking about in his story. There are millions, tens of millions that own all types of weapons including what he calls an "assault weapon" (which is your first indicator he is full of crap) and never commit a crime or think about committing a crime but he walks past those folks to use the lunatic among us to set public policy. I guess if people started using their cars to do mass killing the auto industry would be next.

The analysis during the last "assault weapons" ban was found to have had no impact on crimes/mass shootings etc. It is a feel goodism that addresses the wrong end of the problem. It looks at the tool and not the user of the tool. It lays blame at objects and not people.

Here's what I think "we" aren't saying enough in response; yes-some weapons were designed to be more effective in combat-and that's why private citizens should have access to them.
