Many people don't think about retirement. I too am doing well, a little planning goes a long way !

I think the challenge some people have is not setting themselves up to fully retire and it usually hits them at the last minute.

- In my case, I did it in stages, I still volunteer, am Commander of DAV Chapter 90, Norwood, MA, am on Victory for Veterans in an Advisory capacity & I work 1-day/week for my son's IT Company... None of which I have to do, but choose to do...

All good advice. On social security I would only add that you do get less (monthly benefit) if you start taking it earlier. An important factor is how long you will live. If you start taking at 62 and live until 75 you will collect far more than if you wait until 70 and die at 75. A lot of the TOTAL benefit is driven by how long you live.
Let's be honest, the early years of retirement will be more enjoyable than the later ones more than likely. The government wants you to delay taking it because they know many will die and collect none or less than they might have. None of us are guaranteed a single day of life.
