Canada's governments over the decades let this problem fester too long. 1 destroyer and 2 supply ships retired in the last 3 years. New ships are in the pipeline but it is a slow process. Canada could do this if they put 2% of its GDP toward Defense. Currently it is at 1.1%.

Seems for Canada like many nations including the United States Defense is the last thing on their mind until a crisis gets their attention and they have to act. Its kind of like the Police on a local scale, on a national scale no one thinks of the Military until they need them. Keeping them ready and equipped may have prevented the problem but it seem over and over some people have never learned from Histories lessons !

Current rate of spending is insufficient. I think we had all better hope the sh-t doesn't hit the fan anytime soon.
