Definitely applies to self defense but also applies to learning any new skill. Leave your ego in the car.

Great post.
For me at least, it was confronting the "reality" vs. the "myth" of where I was when I started. I think veterans are particularly vulnerable to this because we hold a great deal of pride in our past (key word... PAST) accomplishments, and may, or may not realize that many skills are perishable... that age is ruthless hunter...and that much of what we learned "then" isn't applicable to the scenarios we're likely to face "now".
