I did not know he was so involved with Yellowstone National Park . I did know the the M551 tank was named after him. A maintenance nighmare, speaking from personal experience.

I've been interested in Sheridan's career since I acquired a book by H.W.S. Cleveland entitled "Hints to Riflemen" (New York, 1864) with a bookplate on the inner front cover reading "Lieut. Gen. P.H. SHERIDAN, U.S. Army" and a stamped "Received Jun 25 1873 MIL. DIV. MO", which I purchased back in the 1970s in Southern California. It' a rather neat book in that it covers all the extant firearms systems, muzzleloading and breechloading, complete with illustrations of targets fired with each rifle and lots of technical information. One thing that interested me about the book (received exactly three years prior to Custer's Last Stand) was that Custer was a very good friend of Sheridan, who then commanded the Military Division of the Missouri, which then included a wide swath of the West. Custer was also a well-known gun enthusiast, so I like to speculate that he may have borrowed this very book from Sheridan's library. It's part of what makes life fun for me.
