I worked the SDB program at Eglin AFB. I never thought I would see them on a C-130 much less an AC-130, LTC (Join to see) !

C-130 has really turned into a workhorse for the Air Force. If the JATO's weren't one and done it'd really be cool.

Ghostrider as a name kind of bring to mind the ole AC47 Gunship, "Spooky" also with a ghost theme name. Notice on the old AC47 the Ghost silhouette painted in the cockpit area of the fuselage on this old warrior. Notice the mini guns sticking out of the back two windows and door on this aircraft. My first experience with the "Spooky gunship was 1968 I was working perimeter at Da Nang Air Base, Vietnam and We were under ground attack by 350 Viet Cong, within 10 minutes all 350 of them were dead. I never had to fire a shot Myself, the gunship took care of that. I sure did have a front row seat with rounds impacting as close as 100 feet from Me. and the flares that were dropped from the AC47 lit the area up very well
I didn't think it was too smart on their part, We had a well defended, well fenced perimeter and even had Claymore mines set up there and the aircraft was stationed at DaNang, all they had to do was take off and proceed to that perimeter area. I was able not only to see the Aircraft take off but our Flight Chief (that's like a Platoon Leader to You guys in the Army or Marines) talking on a PRC25 radio direct to the Pilot and telling Him where He wanted the fire. I was assigned to the USAF, 366th Security Police Squadron at Da Nang Air Base. That wasn't the last time We had "Spooky" work out on our perimeter and even had airstrikes from F4 Phantoms and A1E Skyraider's from the 41st Wing of the VNA, Vietnamese Air Force work out near our perimeter areas. They were also stationed at DaNang Air Base. Helicopter gunships came in a few times from elsewhere at times usually 6 to 8 of them.
When You mentioned the new "Ghostrider" it made Me thing of the AC47, "Spooky" from back in My day and I've never actually seen any of the AC130s in live action but video I've seen I found pretty impressive. Thank for the very interesting post.
