Defense Secretary James Mattis' resignation letter

MY COMMENT: Sounds like Mattis is more the globalist than Trump. America First is not a compromising statement. Mattis served his country well, but apparently not so much the Commander in Chief. Kudos for resigning on principle, the luxury of a retiree. When our military and political goals are the same (WW II), we are unbeatable, but when they are different, we cannot win the big victory (Vietnam). However, in this post-9/11 multi-polar geopolitical world, how possible is it to align militarily and politically in order to be effective and efficient enough to keep winning and moving forward? Three President's, two political parties, and one Global War on Terror make total victory tenuous at best. By the time President Trump leaves office (2020 or 2024) where will we be, and where will we be headed? Our enemies and adversaries know by now to simply delay and then wait us out. The lack of consistency from administration to administration always seems to present opportunities for the bad guys to test the waters. Our political system makes it impossible for any other option. With these challenges, how then do we proceed? Sun Tzu said, "The supreme art of war is to defeat the enemy without battle." Keeping troops in one place for a long time in an amorphous battlefield puts them at greater risk the longer they are there. Better to operate clandestinely, especially when your opponent uses only unconventional methods. We will retain CIA, Shadow Warriors, Forward Observers, done and air capabilities, along with advisers with militia and Kurds. We will be able to reach out and touch whomever we choose, whenever we choose and wherever we choose. My last thought on Mattis is that he may have chosen to fall on his sword in a feint to distract the enemy. If the enemy truly believes the US is completely getting out, they may expose themselves in a way that they can be captured or destroyed. Time will tell. Mattis has served his country well, but there are others waiting in the wings who will serve this country just as well, thank God.
