PO1 William "Chip" Nagel, I made five trips to the FRG with the USAR between '83 and '86. We were in uniform most of the time, and frequently met and made friends with the residents of many of the small towns and villages through which we traveled. Whenever, we met a man old enough to have served in WWII, almost invariably we'd hear the he had served on the Eastern front. In other words, he had fought against Russians and not Americans. It became such a common response, we came to expect it. Naturally, not all of these men fought against Russians as opposed to Americans, but that was the way they dealt with it.
