Very, very complicated plan with multiple landings, Allied forces, and questionable participants. It is a wonder it went as well as it did. Giraud was a piece of work.

Had Churchill, King and Marshall had their way, it would never have happened. Churchill unofficially told the French that no British lives would be lost "liberating them" following their cowardly surrender and subsequent collusion with Germany. King and Marshall in a rare fit of anglo-support, agreed.

Even though England had been in the war since 1939, the USA was demanding the leading role and Churchill was more than happy to allow dead Americans to soothe the American ego. He offered token support to Ike. King likewise had only one enemy (Japan) and did not want a single US ship in the Atlantic.
