Thank you my friend Maj Marty Hogan for honoring USMC Great War marine 2LT platoon leader Fred H. Becker who was killed in action on July 18, 1918 after he was shot in the throat while leading an assault at the Battle of Château-Thierry.
"His platoon pinned down by an enemy machine gun nest, Becker moved forward and took out the nest. The exact details are lost in the mists of time, but according to information sent from service officials, his action was crucial in "preventing the death or injury of many men in his command."
The Marine Corps report continued: "….his self-sacrificing courage permitted his platoon to advance, but as he completed the performance of this noble work, he himself was killed."
He was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (United States’ second highest wartime honor); the Belgian War Cross and Croix de Guerre (highest award France can bestow for battlefield heroism); and American Legion Post number 138 named in his honor.
