August 20, 1882 – Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture debuts in Moscow
Unless Hans Zimmer and Brazzers teamed up to create some sort of soundtrack for “Big Booty Blasters 6” and nobody told this writer, the closest thing we have to a musical orgasm is Tchaikovsky’s epic 1812 Overture.
On this day in 1882 Pytor Tchaikovsky first presented his thundering ode to Russia’s defenders against Napoleons invading armies during the Napoleonic wars of 1812 in Moscow’s unfinished Cathedral of Christ the Savior. With his trademark use of cannons, musket fire and chimes Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture quickly came to symbolize Tsar-era Russian national pride as well as the defacto national anthem.
Today the 1812 Overture is the go to classical tune for explosive fireworks display finales as well as movie food fight scenes, muppet show skits and US Navy recruitment videos. Yep, if it’s manly then the 1812 Overture can embody it in the form of cannons. A guy grilling a steak, mowing his lawn, trimming his beard or even sitting at his desk while fantasizing a Rambo in Syria type scenario: The 1812 Overture will thunder in his mind.

Thank you my friend SGT John " Mac " McConnell for making us aware that on August 20, 1882 Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture debuts in Moscow.
This is a piece which is recognizable to most Russians. Most of us remember the climactic notes in the last few minutes and the cannons which fire :-)
I was raised by a father who enjoyed classical music. I didn't appreciate it growing up but I learned in my 30s to appreciate many classical pieces of music.
It is nice to see a classical-piece orchestral flash-mob complete with cannon :-)
