This is a fairly honest and complete appraisal missing just one point, a very significant one. The US tempted Japan into making the strike at Pearl Harbor. First, the US made aggressive diplomatic attacks on Japan to stir up their passions. The oil embargo was possibly the greatest of them. Then it placed its fleet on display like a paper target. We couldn't have made it more tempting had we painted bulls eyes on each ship. (Of course, the ships that remained in Pearl Harbor were little better than targets and the valuable ships were safely at sea). It's as though FDR was a matador shaking his red cape in the face of the Japanese bull calling, "Eh Tojo. Eh Tojo"

Hmm, oil embargoes then and tariffs today sound frighteningly similar.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen - Really? I don't see it. Japan had no native source of oil and cutting them off from strategic supplies was tantamount to an act of war. Punishing China and the EU today for taking advantage of unfair trade deals negotiated by American idiots is hardly the same thing. FDR's embargo appears to have been intended to tempt Japan into war. President Trump's embargoes appear to be intended to force foreign competitors back to the bargaining table. Interestingly, both appear to work as intended
