Seattle - Wikipedia

Sherry and I just returned from a vacation to Orcas Island and Seattle. We had a great time. I found the early History fascinating. Seattle was founded on tidal marsh land. A saw mill was established early on. The saw dust was used to attempt to reclaim land from the sea. The problem seemed to be tied would wash sewage out, then wash it back in. Between the sewage, rotting saw dust and decaying sea vegetation the saying went “ You could smell Seattle 8 miles before you could see it”. It was explained to us tourists that the Denny party and founders of Seattle were stanch Methodists. Drinking etc was frowned upon. The outer limit of Seattle was the logging road used to skid trees to the lumber mill. It was known as skid road. A fellow showed up with a differant vision for Seattle than the Denny party. This fellow liked drinking and “whoring “ etc. he moved to just across skid road. So being a low life some one was said to be from skid road. Great fun visiting. Also saw the Chihuly glass exhibit. What a wonderful visionary.
