Americans find it particularly hard to learn from others' experiences. We really don't like taking advice from the Brits.

One of my persona attributes that has resulted in my moderate success is the ability to learn from my mistakes AND others mistakes. Both are learning experiences for everyone. We learned a lot from the Brits and happily adopted their technology during WWII. However, to your point, they are an arrogant bunch.
