I wonder if the pressure to work long hours is due to the high cost of living?

I think it is Asian culture of trying to be stoic competition. Worker longer and harder or someone will replace you.

Thew cost of living is not all that extreme if you live like a normal Korean, My youngest lives and works there on Korean wages. My wifes family all seem to be doing well also.
I believe the reasons are mostly cultural rooted with 16 hour (including tutoring ) school days starting in middle school. Somethings they should not have borrowed form the Japanese.

The cost of living is not all that high. Seoul and its environs are not like Tokyo My wife's sisters and in-laws are mostly retired and do quite well.
