"First, they fed one group of rats normal food, and fed another group a piece of beef jerky every other day. They tried to make the rat-adjusted version roughly proportionate to the amount that a human would eat for a snack. Within two weeks, the jerky-eating rats began sleeping irregularly and behaving more excitedly. In other words, they seemed manic."
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Except in their rat adjusted version of the human diet, how many of us eat Jerky every other day? They also said there was no correlation with other cured meats. Most commercial bacon and ham, both of which are cured meats, are cured with nitrates.
Here's my theory... I live in an area where an abnormally large number of academics have summer homes, better than 50% of america's first homes. They are in those summer homes for the better part of three months. Academics must be published regularly to maintain their standing and to argue for pay raises. They are also heavily dependent on government grants to maintain their six-figure, tenured lifestyles. So they come up with these inane studies. Follow the money.
Second the world could do with a few more manic episodes amongst our youth. Perhaps those living in Mom and Dad's basement should be put on a solid diet of Slim Jim's and Mountain Dew. It might counter act the "mellow fellow" effects of all the legalized marijuana.
