On July 10, 1875, Mary McLeod Bethune, American educator (Bethune-Cookman College) and civil rights leader, born in Maysville, South Carolina (d. 1955). She was a good friend of my wife's family, especially Mary Karl, who with Mary Bethune also began Daytona State College.
