Didn't D&RGW have several of those monsters? Growing up near the rail way, I recall seeing them occasionally -- usually northbound in the autumn. They had a high, shrill whistle.

There were literally a few thousand small spur, intra-state railroads in the middle and late 1800s and into the 1900s. Almost all were gone by 1960. Outside of the two biggies and another half dozen medium sized RRs today, any local systems are either tourist-related or very small freighters. The Denver Rio was a persistent survivor.
