My comment made online: First, Julian Assange (currently hiding from justice) is free to walk out of the embassy any time he chooses. The fact that no one has stormed the palace as it were is a stark demonstration of the respect for the rule of law that those who would take him into custody have. Civilized nations respect the rule of law. Mr. Assange can expect fair and just treatment by whichever government he ends up being adjudicated by, Sweden or the US. Second, as for your comment about the US military detention facility, Gitmo is anything but a "hell hole." In fact, when I served there in 2002 as the ranking US Army Medical Department officer for the Joint Detainee Operations Group, Joint Task Force 160, all detainees were treated with dignity and respect and according to the spirit of the Geneva Conventions and the Law of Land Warfare. If it were any different it would have been shut down years ago. According to the ICRC physicians I worked with at Gitmo, "No one does [detention operations] better than the United States."
