I could not agree more with GEN Nicholson's assessment. We need to view Afghanistan the same way we did South Korea. We need to maintain a small investment (relatively speaking) to keep the peace and build the host-nation forces over the long-term (20 to 30 years) in order to protect the larger investment we have already made. Otherwise, we will have learned nothing from our colossal mistake of abandoning Iraq in 2011 and bringing on ISIS.

I agree as well. There was a high degree of frustration when the last administration decided against our assessment back in 2013 and pulled a significant number of our people out. It set us back significantly, but I am happy to see that the Afghan Air Force at a minimum is more independent now.
