While I admire Lou Holtz, I think this speech is formed through his background at an institution that was not exactly a bastion for minorities. Yes if you are born in the US and are of the ethnic background primarily recruited by the institution where he worked you have an advantage. Since Lou is/was a sports coach he was probably exposed to more minorities than what the overall population of his institution was, but they were there because of the advantage of being athletes who happened to be Americans. Yes there are advantages to being born in the US, but it is an advantage that is not shared equally by all born in the US.
