A good friend, Lt(jig) Don East flew those missions on a “Connie”. Don later served as Commander of VQ-1 and retired as a CAPTAIN.. His favorite saying was “If you can’t dazzle ‘em with brilliance, baffle ‘em with BS.” Don was from rural Alabama and used his earnings to buy raw land. He could walk over a heavily wooded tract and estimate the value of the timber on the place and offer the owner a price that matched his estimate of the timber’s value. He acquired hundreds of acres that way and when he retired he had a very nice “savings account” to supplement his Navy retirement pay. He figured it was a much safer investment than the stock market.
