Well, as stupid as it sounds at first look, it may be better than just throwing them all away. Way back in the late 70’s when the Marines adopted the leftover ERDL pattern Vietnam era utilities for daily wear, some were green dominant, some were brown dominant. I had only seen the greener ones in country in I Corps and didn’t know the browner ones were for places like the Central Highlands. I didn’t like them so I took some Rit dark green dye and dyed each new pair of brown ones I had to buy. The khaki of the pattern became the lighter green of the green dominant version and looked so much like the green ones that no one ever asked about them.
If for nothing else, dying all those Army & Air Force gray cammies with a green or coyote industrial dye would extend their useful camouflage life for quite a while.
That plus find the retired idiot general who approved that stupid gray pattern and reduce him to private working in the laundry dyeing the cammies.

Did they ever consider trying a color that blends with what nature put there ? What a huge waste of money to keep changing these things .

Cynthia Croft - I find also they only need to look just to our own North to Canada, They have actually figured out what color nature has and have far superior camouflage patterns on their uniforms. I could see very good samples of that at Hanscom AFB, MA where some people from the Canadian Military were stationed. In out own services it seems only the Marines figured out what colors are in nature they have to blend with, no one else seems to have figured that out. It would be interesting to see if this invisible concept is what they say it is esp as some of today's so called camouflage only conceals slightly better better than just wearing white in snow free surroundings

Cynthia Croft - That would make too much sense ! At one point actually there had been a universal woodland Camouflage pattern and it was used for years, it seems though even though it worked pretty well it wasn't kept. Of course it wasn't because there was money to be made... or was there ? Then that was abandoned for things that didn't work any where near as well. (the exception being the Marines)

Cynthia Croft - That does appear to be the case, We needed someone like Him for quite a long time.

This was originally mentioned when the Army announced that the "New" OCP pattern would be adopted. The plan was for all UCP OCIE to be dyed in Coyote. Considering the cost and lifespan of these items, especially in the RC, I thought it could have merit. As usual, the devil is in the details and outside of the original mention, have never heard or seen mention of that again.
