ZEPHYRHILLS — K’Lyn, a local 13-year-old vocalist and mandolin player, has produced a debut CD of her music and a release party will be held Saturday.
Inspired by watching her grandfather Matthew Wright perform in church, K’Lyn said she developed a love of country, gospel and bluegrass and began playing the mandolin and singing at an early age. At the age of 6, she joined her grandfather, who also plays the mandolin, in performing at their church.
K’Lyn, who goes by her first name professionally, will hold a release party at 1 p.m. Saturday at the B.Y. Wickstrom stage in Zephyr Park.
The teen and her band will perform at the event. Her first CD, “For Every Valley,” will be on sale, and autographs will be available.
A portion of the proceeds from all sales of K’Lyn’s CD will be donated to the Neighborhood Care Center (NCC). In addition, K’Lyn encourages all of those attending to bring a contribution of nonperishable food items to help those in need this holiday season. Complimentary cake, cookies and beverages will be served.
K’Lyn Wright, a home-schooled eighth grader, was born Kaelyn Schrader on Aug. 31, 2001, in Frankfurt, Germany, to a military family. She moved in with her grandparents, Matthew and Judy Wright, in Zephyrhills at an early age.
She abbreviated her first name when she was about 8 because she was frustrated at people misspelling it.
Her album is a combination of country and gospel bluegrass. Three of the songs have never been recorded in the U.S. — “For Every Valley,” “Give It To The Lord,” and “Sink or Swim.”
K’Lyn said her favorite song on the album is “Caught In the Crossfire,” a song of a child stuck in the middle of a parental breakup. The CD will cost $10, with $2 going to the NCC.
K’Lyn has attended bluegrass festivals across the nation with her grandparents, where she had opportunities to sing along with other bluegrass artists. She performed at the Sertoma Youth Ranch Thanksgiving Bluegrass Festival in 2008 with the Gary Waldrep Bluegrass Band.
“I mentioned to Gary that I knew all of his songs, so he invited me up to sing,” K’Lyn recalled. She said that was when she knew she wanted to perform professionally. She began learning to play the mandolin from her grandfather, but later took lessons from local musicians Dean Johnson and Clint Dockery of Auburndale.
K’Lyn hopes the CD release goes well and hopes to be a star someday. She said 10 years from now she wants “to be playing and singing and maybe have a hot pink and lime green Prevost bus.”
K’Lyn acknowledges that bluegrass is not the first choice of kids her age.
“That’s for sure,” she said with a sigh. “When I find people my age who play bluegrass, it’s so much fun.”
But bluegrass is not her only taste in music. “I like listening to contemporary Christian stuff like Casting Crowns, Third Day and Mercy Me. I also like Carrie Underwood and Blake Shelton. I like pop, but not very much pop.”
In 2011, K’Lyn won the grand prize at the Sertoma Thanksgiving Bluegrass Festival rising star competition in Brooksville, and in 2012 she performed at the Sertoma Spring Festival.
She has been featured at the Will Maclean Festival at Brooksville in 2012, Auburndale Bluegrass Festival in 2013 and 2014.
