Proven to be wrong in the end. 20/20 hindsight always helps to bring things into perspective.

I believe Ed Lansdale was at that meeting. He advocated against "big war" type fighting, promoting action toward a stable government, elimination of graft in the SVN military, promotion of strong leadership in the rural villages, and competing with the VC for the "hearts and minds" of the people. Definitely against massive bombing and artillery fire. His main stance was if you kill civilian women and children, the VC and NVA will win. He was proven right. Sadly, too late and at a terrible cost.
American killed in Viet Nam; over 58,000
Vietnamese killed: 3.5 million.

SP5 Mark Kuzinski - There is a good book out about that. The Road Not Taken, by Max Boot. I highly recommend it to anyone student or Veteran of that war.
