I think about how this war would have been waged with today’s weapons. I think we could have “owned the night” and the Ho Chi Minh trail. It would have shut them down.

Totally disagree.
We did beat the NVA initially.
It's COIN. Which is why "with today's weapons", we haven't 'won' Iraq in 15 years

MAJ (Join to see) - Agreed. We haven’t tried to win (complete the job) in in Iraq, because we “pulled out” after our initial and secondary objectives were overwhelmingly met. Not saying we could afford it. It always takes sustained presence on the ground in force until the enemy comes to the realization that continued resistance is futile...... This only “partially” occurred in Iraq, until other terror groups filled in the vacuum that we left. However, our weapons in Iraq proved overwhelmingly capable of doing the job required, had we chosen to keep our forces there- which we didn’t. Look at our “losses” compared to the scope of what was accomplished in Iraq. Had those weapons been utilized in Vietnam, we could have shut down the Ho Chi Minh trail, could have “owned the night” and lost far fewer personnel. Pinpoint bombing of targets in North Vietnam could have wiped out anti-air, transportation, and communications, and “war fighting capabilities” at a level that, in another time and place, totally “shut down” Iraqi Forces....... That is not to say that we would have “won”, given the politics of the day and the anti-war sentiment of so many Americans. We had “presence” in Vietnam, but we lacked in the sustained “execution” using the given “tools” and “will”.

SP5 Mark Kuzinski. Good Morning and thanks for the shear. Don’t believe I was there then. But we had F105’s at Korat all the time. I am going to have to look up some dates because the numbers arn’t coming up as fast as they use too. But that was a long time ago. Has to be over 50 years and that is hard to believe. Have a great day.
