There are people on here defending the Deputies, go ahead and argue but I have been trained and been part of active shooter training as a police officer. I have even played the role of active shooter in simulation. Though I left law enforcement in January, I promise I still remember active shooter. I am not dissecting the specifics of action which I would never do, I am criticizing the lack of action by deputies. I set throw some active shooter training with a local women's group that was provided by a local sheriff himself. All the sheriffs I have met while on flood duty in Louisiana would have not allowed what went down with deputies hiding. I have worked hand in hand with deputies that were serving as school resource officers. I often thank my daughters school resource officer. A lot of my family is from Jonesboro, AR, where the West Side Elementary shooting took place and the led counselor for that incident was my Psych Professor in college. So do not get it twisted, I do know something about this subject.

I can get people stating that they just froze because reasons (although we are just going to set aside opinions on badges and duties aside for the moment) But...I become concerned when I begin to see people reframing those officers actions in such a way to make their inaction a virtuous thing. That concerns me, cause yeah that might just be a few wackjobs on the internet but we also live in an age where sensational and inflammatory opinions are a commodity. I'm looking at those early and habituated reframing mechanics and I already see some opportunistic troll who is going to try out their powers of sophistry to become relevant and financially secure off of the newest edgy sensational thing.

AA Joseph Moody - Good point (opinion) but they should not serve in law enforcement then (opinion).

(This part is not an opinion) The active shooter training disciplines very one has single officer entry some have no less than 2 but to stop all together means a failure. The key to the Broward County Sheriff argument to make guns illegal is that law enforcement will be the ones to stop bad people with guns. His arguments fails in that his own deputies will not enter a building. There is a doctrine to active shooter which is clear stop unmitigated homicide with law enforcement (not an opinion).

No where did I insert an opinion in the above statement but I will now do so below.

Now here is my opinion, the Sheriff should resign, the sheriff department should apologize just as did the FBI, they should consider either arming the faculty or handing jurisdiction over to the city which would be unprecedented.

MAJ (Join to see) - Oh, I agree with you on them not serving, they were tried and tested and failed and it is time that they move on before some other life is forfeit, but what is a whole other level of creepy is watching people use the language of social justice to begin reframing the actions of those officers as heroic...I can wrap my brain around being tested and failing but the latter is something that truly scares me. But some people are committed to taking the system down no matter the cost.

I know it, MAJ (Join to see). The more this event unfolds the more bizarre it gets. One of the guys assigned to the school waits for three of his fellow LEOs, and then THEY wait until the local PD arrives to go in? I'm sorry to say LE failed before and during this event.

When I served as a reserve police officer would have been right through that door. Wait maybe I would have paused for a second to look left then right before crossing the road. Aside from that I would have breached.

MAJ (Join to see) - I've said the same thing. A couple of folks said they would wait. OK, Another officer shows up, now you have back-up! Enter and clear. 4? Wow. The first guy had one job. What about all 4? Hopefully there is more that will shed light on it all. I'm usually pretty much pro-LE.

TSgt David L. - Some department policies favor teams of 2 but the resource officer and the 3 deputies should have entered. What was worse is the city police showed up and did the job of the deputies. Schools are the domain of the county sheriff department.

I am an active shooter instructor, I teach the ALERRT version. ALERRT teaches if a lone officer arrives on scene and they can still hear shooting from inside the building, they are encourage to enter the building by themselves and move to the sound of gunfire to stop the killing. If the sounds of gun fire stops, then it turns into a search and the officer should radio to the tactical command center and wait for follow on officers. I have 14 years in civilian law enforcement, I will go into a school to stop the killing. The oath I took didn't say "until it gets to dangerous".

Amen brother, I do not have 14 years but was taught the same and all versions, I have seen or heard of, encourage the law enforcement officer to enter. You do not have to be military to be trained to handle active shooters.
