Map, compass, & radio was all FO/SFCP/FAC had back in the day.
Would’ve loved to have had GPS but the first satellites were still in the future for us.

Amen to that!
I had a Garmen wrist GPS. It was great for knowing your EXACT grid down to the 10 digit. That was the fanciest piece of gear I had but an FO I was working with had a Vector laser range finder/compass/GPS. You look through it like a set of binos, click the button, and everything you need to blow the enemy up is in your vision. That made calling CAS a snap!

We had a unit you could put on a jeep... ships binoculars (20x IIRC), AN/TVS-4 night vision sight, laser rangefinder, & compass. Weighed like 500 lbs.
I saw one... once... never used one & never saw one again.

First gps system our artillery unit ever used was a Jeep-mounted box about the size of a small cooler as I recall. For some time, we still verified data with hasty survey techniques (SIMO, Polaris-Kochab, etc)
