That is sad news Sgt Randy Wilber that two soldiers were killed when a "U.S. Army Apache helicopter crashed Saturday morning on January 20, 2018 at Fort Irwin in California, a spokesman for the Army said.
The AH64 Apache crashed early Saturday morning at the military training facility, which is northeast of Barstow, Army spokesperson Lt. Col. Jason S. Brown said in a statement.
The crash is under investigation and next of kin notifications were ongoing, he said."
That is very sad news especially for the grieving family and friends.
I am puzzled by the statement the "family's won't be getting the $100,000 that is given to families because of the government shutdown."
1. SGLI coverage is available in $50,000 increments up to the maximum of $400,000 and I expect those two helicopter pilots had the full $400,00 SGLI coverage.
2. It is true that newly bereaved family members would not receive the Pentagon's $100,000 death gratuity during a shutdown.
2. Servicemembers Group Life Insurance (SGLI) payments, however, would not be affected. Therefore the families should receive the maximum of $400,000 SGLI and I expect those two helicopter pilots had the full $400,00 SGLI coverage.
Pay including retired pay and Military Exchanges will not be affected by the government shutdown

RIP soldiers and prayers to the families. I have a few simple issues with the story- their payments will be delayed and part two you would be hard pressed to find any soldier deployed (or at home) that has elected the lower $100K option. It has been $400K for many years. Members have to select the amounts, and most just select the max. I have stated this before- this has become a kick the can game for years and not supporting or defending either side. I am however blaming both sides. We need to wake up and use our votes to show them the polls they are listening to or creating statistics to match their side are not close to the truth.

I'm talking about the Pentagon's newly bereaved $100,000 death gratuity, said it will not be paid during shut down. I agree there are problems on both sides but one of the main reasons President Trump got elected was he said he was going to take on the illegal aliens I think it's a cheap shot shutting down the government when I believe the majority of the country wants illegal aliens situation addressed it's not like they didn't know this was coming.

I fully agree with you on some of the immigration issues, but congress had the chance to do that earlier this year and failed to do it. The republicans did not re fund CHIP in September when they had the chance and now are holding that over the democrats heads. Congress also had the chance to pass a bill that would protect DACA personnel, but as always, kick the can down the road. Since the election of Trump, this congress has become dysfunctional and it is not only the military that will suffer, but all Americans as well. What congress did do was give their donors and big business huge permanent tax cuts while giving everybody else temporary cuts. That seems to be their priority rather than the military or any other problems we are facing.
I know this is just my opinion and it probably wouldn't get me a cup of coffee.

Sgt Randy Wilber concur. This just didn't pop up on 18 Jan. @Dennis Dorsey I don't recall Congress ever being functional.

Maj Marty Hogan - FYI I recommend you view my earlier answer above, my friend. The $400k SGLI payment for these two pilots was not delayed by the temporary government shutdown - only the $100k death gratuity which is funded separately.

Very sad news! The democrats need to revise their thinking and come on board.
