I have a very deep respect for Dr. King and have studied his speeches. The man had a vision and a way of articulating his thoughts that make today’s superfluous rants look… like superfluous rants. Here is an excerpt from his 1957 speech “Facing the challenge of the new age”:
“A third challenge that stands before us is that of entering the new age with understanding and good will. This simply means that the Christian virtues of love, mercy and forgiveness should stand at the center of our lives. There is a danger that those of us who have lived so long under the yoke of oppression, those of us who have been exploited and trampled over, those of us who have had to stand amid the tragic midnight of injustice and indignities will enter the new age with hate and bitterness. But if we retaliate with hate and bitterness, the new age will be nothing but a duplication of the old age. We must blot out the hate and injustice of the old age with the love and justice of the new. This is why I believe so firmly in nonviolence. Violence never solves problems. It only creates new and more complicated ones. If we succumb to the temptation of using violence in our struggle for justice, unborn generations will be the recipients of a long and desolate night of bitterness, and our chief legacy to the future will be an endless reign of meaningless chaos.”
Well, that’s a message that is applicable to everybody, regardless of race, color, ethnicity or whatever other factor people come up with to “differentiate” and “segregate”. And some people learned from Dr. King’s message. Others didn’t.

LTC (Join to see) - Today I watched a video of the Reverend marching with his fellows, and I was struck at how well dressed and how well mannered they all were, and singing "We Shall Overcome". Today, the people who claim to march for the same things MLK Jr. marched for do not look anything like him at all. They are untidy, poorly dressed, and chant vile hate-filled things rather than sing uplifting things. I believe MLK Jr. wouldn't even recognize them, not only from their appearance and hateful chants, but also from their abandonment of the idea that people should be treated by the content of their character, not on the color of their skin. He would be thoroughly disgusted by the identity politics of today.

SSgt Christopher Brose - True. Very true. Dr. King warned (as shown in the excerpt above) of the consequences of going the way of bitterness and hate. Unfortunately, too many people opted for that route - on all sides of teh fence - and we are seeing the consequences today. And there are too many politicians, some stoking the bitterness and hate and others sitting on the sidelines, waiting to take advantage of it... and these political opportunists are the people who are destroying our country.
