"Better living through chemicals". There's an oxymoron for those affected by Agent Orange.

I did not see it in the list of events for November 20, but the battle of Tarawa began this date in 1943. That was an especially bloody invasion that served as instruction for the USMC. The shore bombardment by the battleships' 16 inch guns had to be longer and directed at pill boxes and other fortifications. The Japanese contested the invading Marines as they were coming on shore. A mistake by observers of the beach well before the invasion had confused some tidal conditions. The invaders had to jump from their craft much further out and so unprotected Marines had to wade ashore under heavy packs. Many wounded men drowned. The battle of Tarawa became a lessons learned that ultimately saved American lives later on in the war. The Japanese also learned and hid their defensive positions better. They learned to wait for their enemies to wade on shore and contest them on land. This made later invasions including Iwo Jima & Okinawa much more protracted and very bloody land battles.

But then again what about war is not especially cruel and barbaric.
