I’m 63 and questioning whether this is something I want to do / can do. I just dropped a 57 year old friend off at Amicalola Falls, the approach trail to Springer Mountain - Southern Terminus of the AT, yesterday.

The approach trail from Amicalola to Springer Mountain (about 9 miles) is MUCH tougher than the first 30 or so miles of the AT... The majority of folks quit at either Woody Gap or Mountain Crossing just north of Blood Mountain.

Sgt Wayne Wood - Thanks. That’s actually very encouraging. I hiked from Lower Amicalola to Springer Mountain last July for my 63rd birthday - it whooped my butt. I’ve done some short sections Néel’s Gap to Blood Mountain and Hog Pen Gap to Cow Rock. I was going to do the Woody Gap to Néel’s Gap route but bad weather and my hiking buddy derailed me on that.
