Thanks for reminding us SP5 Mark Kuzinski that on October 12, 1970 President Richard M. Nixon announced that the United States will withdraw 40,000 more troops before Christmas. He had first announced his intention to withdraw U.S. troops from South Vietnam in June at the Midway Conference with President Nguyen Van Thieu.
This was great news to the families of the returning service members.
However, Vietnamization was based on a time schedule instead of a achieved capability prior to next step process. That horrible design led to the destruction of South Vietnam on April 30, 1975.
