MajGen Butler was a complicated leader, and a controversial one, too. He wasn't afraid to step on toes to do what he thought he should do. I have to wonder, though, how much of what he achieved would have been possible without the protection and influence of his father, a powerful congressman for much of Butler's military career. As good as MajGen Butler was in military matters, his outspokenness certainly alienated other officers in the Marine Corps, which affected him by not being appointed Commandant.

I know, I realize, I suppose that was why, along with, I think, his double MOH, I believe, I've always found him as fascinating as I have...that thungnhe did about that conspiratorial aspect about Central American wars I also found esp fascinating, as well....
