It was common for women at the time to live as men. Single women led a hard life. Living as a man gave them financial and economical freedom. Civil laws favored males. A middle age widowed female did not have much choice in some cases than to pretend to be a man to save their property or to maintain a good standard of living. That doesn't make all these women "transgender". Assigning modern gender terms to what happened during the Civil War era is grossly inaccurate.

I am not one to support the use of the word transgender to Bastardize history or the lgb labels either.
I will never give my individual consent to being labelled "transgender" or included in the LGBT.
To me nothing is more homophobic or transphobic and caters to heterosexual privilege then the idea we are all part of some B.S community or want to be!
As the article points out no one knows the individual motives of those involved in this history.
You cannot give them justice or respect their individual existence and rights by doing so.
It brought a tear to my eye to see that in death those who knew sought to mark his grave in such a way to put his identity of a man and accomplishments of, above his birth name and listed birth sex.
Today I hope we can move beyond outing someone for their listed birth sex in death as transgender activist advocate in doing!

Sorry I beg to differ!
The word transgender was professionally adopted in violation of professional organizations own ethics policies and United States Human experimentation law.
I view lgbt activist and their supporters rightly so as domestic enemies promoting a heterosexist and eugenics agenda!

1stSGT Nelson Kerr put on thinking cap and please explain to me how the idea that anyone that is deemed not heterosexual or man or woman magically belongs to a singular political group and its labels?
How is that professionally ethical or legal?
How is that not the poster the poster child of homophobia, transphobia, heterosexism,, conversion therapy, and illegal human experimentation?
While their maybe people who choose to self-identify as "LGBT" that does grant the right to put their group agenda above professional ethics and U.S law concerning individual.
It took a special type of criminally minded professional to get the public to buy the bag full of crap called the LGBT!

I agree. The biggest problem with identity politics is who gets to speak for the "group"? Usually its a self appointed activist that deicdes that they are the ones qualified to speak for everyone else with or wihout their consent. Also if you could happen to belong to one of their prepackaged groups and you happen to disagree with their party line, watch out! They will call you a traitor to your demogaphic. This is why I don't like identity politics. I am not a traitor to my gender based on my views any more than Lisa is. People should be judged as individuals.
