It's unfortunate that the individuals life had to end. I'm sure the police officer is suffering too.
As to the protest, based on my much older experiences at Tech, I would assume most if not all of the protesters were not GA Tech students. Back in the 60's and 70's, the seldom occurring VN protests were mostly organized and attended by outsiders (as a GA Tech student back then).
Last (minor point), GA Tech is not an university; "University officials have told students ...".

I'm just north of Atlanta... the protestors probably weren't GA Tech student... and you notice there were no more protests... Tech AIN'T Berkeley!
