The Vietnam War was the first war with near real-time video reporting which was largely uncensored PO1 Tony Holland.
Liberal Camelot darling JFK got us involved in Vietnam in force after supporting the Vietnamese more quietly since the 1950s. Democratic POTUS LBJ tried to do what is right many times as did Republican POTUS Richard Nixon.
I expect that Ken Burns may offer a fair and balanced approach to the Vietnam War.
For the first time in our history, our enemy the North Vietnamese was able to use real-time propaganda against us. Our own media outlets loved to get images of suffering civilians and cruel and heartless service members. Those went the equivalent of viral - My lai, naked little girl running from burning village, police chief in Saigon executing a suspected VC prisoner, etc.
We learned our lessons about embedded reporters and applied that to all operations since the from Operation Urgent Fury in 1983 on Grenada to current day, embedded reporting has been screened.
Generally we are restricted on what we can learn about our force operations - that is a good thing.
We are still bombarded by other nations news outlets on Syria, etc. Much of the international media is against our interests so they don't have issues with spinning stories ...

Capt Seid Waddell Capt Tom Brown SFC William Farrell SSgt Robert Marx Maj Marty Hogan PO1 William "Chip" Nagel SPC Margaret Higgins SSG William Wall MSgt Jason McClish AN Christopher Crayne LTC Bill Koski Sgt Trevor Barrett SPC Tom DeSmet SGT Charles H. Here we go again. What folly? The Communist invasion of South Vietnam was a integral element of the stated Stalinist strategy of spreading communism throughout the world. We stood against it and succeeded (until Congress snatched defeat from the jaws of victory). Yes, we made many mistakes. Westmoreland attempted to fight it as a conventional war and gained nothing. Abrams introduced more successful strategies. Johnson micromanaged the air war preventing us from attacking the enemy in their sanctuaries. Nixon took the fight to the enemy in their sanctuaries. We learned lots of lessons the hard way, but we learned them and won.
