I will say that in college, I took a course titled "Science of Everyday Life". What it turned out to be was a physics course geared around life situations and scenarios, and teaching the science in those terms (I'd taken a physics course in high school, so I had a little higher understanding going into the course than your average student). The presentation was vastly more relatable than I was used to in a science course, while still delivering the necessary curriculum and knowledge needed to advance in the sciences. It was actually refreshing to see that sort of angle taken. If they took that sort of approach with math, or even satisfy the requirements with other forms of math (Statistics, anyone?) if possible and practical, that might not be such a bad idea. It beats the alternative of dropping the requirement completely from certain programs.
