Hard to imagine what it was like in the 40s and 50s for homosexuals. Article gives a good insight into why we can never return to such an environment for federal workers.

Back in the 80s and 90s, I served with a number of obviously gay troops. One was a female CMSgt. Nobody really gave a shit. They were good at their jobs. Great leaders in most cases. This was well before don't ask don't tell and admitting it would be a one-way ticket out. Still, it wasn't exactly a secret. Some things are tough to hide. We basically just didn't care what they did on their private time. I will admit these were not combat units. That said, I lived in coed dorms several times and did not accidentally sleep with anyone gay or straight. My point is, we make too big a deal out of a person's sexuality which has nothing to do with job performance and only affects unit cohesion if you're a bigot. All due respect to bigots. I think we need to pay more to "rape culture." (Though I hate that term, the current statistics are despicable. But that's a different thread.)
