We are running out of time to get these stories first hand from the men that lived them. That is the focus of my book "The Old Man on the Bench". I applaud this young man for his project. I know a man that served in WWII in the Navy, who never talked about it. Then one day I was in his home and noticed a letter from the Secretary of the Navy on the wall of his den. As I began reading it, I realized it was the Navy Cross.......awarded to him for his actions as a dive bomber pilot in the battle of the Philippine Sea. This man, who had come home after the war and devoted the rest of his life to being a teacher, was one of the kindest people you would ever meet.......but in his day.....when his country called on him......he was a warrior! How many more of these stories are out there? I suspect a lot of them.

My story, The Old Man on the Bench, is fictional......but I strive to capture the essence of our young men as they left to fight in WWII, and the impact it had on them for the rest of their lives. A lot of what is in the story is based on stories told to me by people that lived through that era. I feature the battle of Iwo Jima in the book.....to honor an uncle of mine who fought there, and carried tiny pieces of shrapnel in his back for the rest of his life. I tried to make the book informative, as well as entertaining. It's available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble in paperback form.......and also available on Kindle in electronic form. I have six books out there........and I'm told this one is my best work. Give it a look, and let me know what you think.

My grandfather's memory is going bad. He flew bombers over the Japanese mainland to hit oil refineries. He lost several friends and made several emergency landings on Iwo Jima. He's thankful for his fellow servicemen who died taking that island. Unlikely to be alive today if he landed there under Japanese control.

Greg, thank you, and I salute your grandfather. He is a true hero in my book. For your family's sake, try to get him to dialogue with someone and record whatever you can. It's worth more than gold.

I just got a decent camera. I need to head up there perhaps over Fall break and interview him if I can. May God restore his memory!
