I didn't know about the WWI submarine but in the next war (WWII) measures to prevent that from happening again took place. Many years Later during World War II The unit emblem of the CAP, Civil Air Patrol Anti Submarine Coastal Patrol unit that covered Cape Cod during WWII. CAP was the official Auxiliary of the US Army Air Corps in WWII and had 21 Bases on the East Coast to watch for German Submarines operating off the US coastal areas. They spotted a few hundred German Submarines and even with some made bomb racks the unpaid volunteers from CAP had actually sunk two German U boats although they had dropped bombs and depth charges on 52 German Submarines operating along the US East Coast. The Patrol base here was located in Falmouth (Cape Cod), Massachusetts. (the town name in red is misspelled under the emblem)
