There’s an effort to name the next unnamed guided missile destroyer, DDG 127, after Fire Controlman 1st Class Gary L. Rehm Jr., who died in the crash of the USS Fitzgerald saving 20 sailors and attempting to save 6 others who were trapped in the blazing fire below below decks. Epitomizing the guiding principle of Ship, Shipmate, Self, Sacrificing his life that other crewman might live. For this reason His fellow crewman have issued this petition requesting the Secretary of the Navy so honor him by naming DOG 127 after him.
Seven American sailors died when the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) collided with a cargo ship in the sea off the coast of Japan. Yet the costs say shipmates would have been much higher if not actions dedication and sacrifice of Fire Controller First Class, Gary L. Rehm.
An investigation is continuing as to how the ships crashed into each other.
