I have always contended that the families of our soldiers have a tougher row to hoe than those who wear the uniform...as this video supports. We know what we volunteered to do. When we are actually in the middle of something, we are too busy to be scared while our loved one sit not knowing AND the unknown is always more troubling than the worst that we face? Last, the loved one's of service members, also have to deal with the demons and darkness that haunt us when we do return and realize that all those things we ignored in the heat of the moment are still clinging to us?

You're right SP5 Christine Conley, we are most often our worst critics and impossible to please at times. Part of trying to right wrongs lies in the ability to forgive yourself.

SGT Michael Thorin - Thats what I like about the US. military is that they tend to be warriors of righteousness and take lessons from the bible to mirror Gods Army , I think everybody should take Ephesians 6 to heart and put the whole armor of God on everyday Because God has our Six !!! Bless you all in RP land !!!

I want to submit a reminder that the movie "The Deer Hunter" should be on anyone's summer viewing list. It is probably one of the most poignant films I have ever watched about the Vietnam war. It's a real tearjerker and far exceeds, at least in my opinion, "Platoon," "Go Tell the Spartans" and "Full Metal Jacket" in its portrayal of young American men trapped in a misbegotten military conflict that ended in abject failure. The principal actors are Robert Deniro, Christopher Walken, Meryl Streep, John Cazale and John Savage. Please take the opportunity and watch this movie. I guarantee that it will soften even the most hardbitten heart of any combat vet.

Personally I found "We Were Soldiers" to be quite poignant. I was a child in the early stages of the Vietnam War and I can remember when the first casualties started coming in. We lived on base housing and the taxi drivers used to deliver the notices via Telegram. Mom was the senior NCO wife and had the taxi driver deliver them to her, so she could bring them to the widow herself. I went with her on several occasions.
Seeing a scene like this depicted in the film brought back Deep Emotions for me.
When I earned soldier of the month award in 1979, the Army sent a congratulatory telegram to my mother, which I had specifically requested they not do. It was delivered by taxi and she nearly had a heart attack.
Everyone love a good war movie but people often forget the cost of war to thise on the homefront.

Thank you for your comment SSG Rousseau. I construed the "Deer Hunter" as an American tragedy in a classical sense. One of the principle protagonist, Nick, who was totally shattered and irrevocably traumatized, was ultimately doomed and denied any redemptive attributes that might have rendered his sordid death more meaningful and purposive. "We Were Soldiers" reminded me of "Pork Chop Hill" a movie about a Korean War battle that featured an archetypal commanding officer (Gregory Peck) who demonstrated the indomitable spirit of the American soldier in the crucible of combat. "The Deer Hunter" on the other hand, has a certain covert edginess that was consistently heart rendering and left me unspeakably sad.
