As much as I'm all for recognizing my Shipmates, I agree with the refusal. Simply put their ship was outside of the combat zone.

Please see Maj John Bell's response. Forrestal was in the combat zone.

Apples & oranges. Our country did not become involved in WWII until the attacks on Pearl Harbor.

MSgt Robert C Aldi - The South China Sea is bound by Viet Nam on the West and the Philippines on the East. Exactly where the Eastern boundaries of the Viet Nam Combat zone were, I do not know, but I am quite sure that it is far more distance than the range of Naval Guns. I checked my fathers flight logs and found one reference that referred to conducting carrier ops for a mission, where the launch station was approximately 70 NM from "feet dry". I would bet the farm that 70 NM was still in the "combat zone".
I seriously doubt that those destroyers steamed out of the combat zone if they had missions the next day.

IF they were there, ADD THEM!!! I know how the service branches hate to admit wrongdoings (SFC Alwyn Cashe, CPL Pat Tillman.....minorities not receiving the MOH on equal terms as peers), so are we really surprised?

SSG Warren Swan on your comment about minorities not receiving MOH is a true statement, we see the US attempting to correcting this. I am too young to have served in VN. I do personally know a VN VET who is just now being reviewed for MOH his actions saved a platoon after receiving 2 GSW's a concussion he fought on till reinforcements arrived. He was awarded Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He has never said anything against the US Army even though he is a African American he says he is proud to be a VN Vet.
