Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Let me quality that. The beholder in the time beauty is created. Cars like the Edsel were designed when cars generally looked like that. It's distinctive feature, the grill, paid omage to the Mercedes of that time. Some cars were simply too radical for their time. Studebaker often fell prey to this problem. People expecting the basic runabout design with balloon fenders were put off by its sleek contours. After the company failed, others caught up and imitated the Hawk and the Avanti in the decades that followed. My vote for the ugliest car in its own time goes to the Pontiac Aztek

the Edsel was a beautiful car, and still is. I wish I could find one of those elusive barn finds!
