With his army surrounded, his men weak and exhausted, Robert E. Lee realized there was little choice but to consider the surrender of his Army to General Grant. After a series of notes between the two leaders, they agreed to meet on April 9, 1865, at the house of Wilmer McLean in the village of Appomattox Courthouse. The meeting lasted approximately two and one-half hours and at its conclusion the bloodliest conflict in the nation's history neared its end.

Lee only had about 2,500 men left, another week and there would have been nothing to surrender. One of his main points was amnesty, He had sat in judgement of, and executed the traitors who took up arms against the United States in the Mexican War. It was not a far reach to imagine himself and his staff at the end of a rope

You have to remember that General Meade was relieved after his victory at Gettysburg. Lincoln had ordered him to pursue Lee and finish it there. He chose to lick his wounds.

I think that amnesty was too free ly given to the senior officers and Politicians after that war.

me too, they scrapped their loyalty oaths to take up arms against the United States. They were responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousand of American soldiers.
